Equinor, Jera and J-Power have partnered up to jointly evaluate and work towards submitting a bid for offshore wind power projects off the coasts of Noshiro and Yurihonjo in Akita Prefecture in Japan.

The Japanese Government has dedicated Yurihonjo and Noshiro, two areas offshore the northern Japanese prefecture of Akita, as promotional zones for offshore wind, each representing an area for bottom-fixed offshore wind farms of approximately 400 MW and 700 MW respectively.

The upcoming auction is anticipated to start within the next months, with bid submission taking place six months after the auction opens. Once the auction is closed, the results are expected to be announced towards the end of 2021. Potential wind farms would then tentatively be operative post 2025.

J-Power is the second largest wind power producers in Japan with approximately 530MW net wind power generation capacity. The company has been operating onshore wind power generation projects in Nikaho city and Yurihonjo city, Akita Prefecture for a number of years. It supported the development, construction, operation, and decommissioning of offshore wind power demo-project off Kita-Kyushu City and it has been awarded the Kitakyushu Hibikinada offshore wind power project through the auction. Furthermore, it owns stake in the
Triton Knoll offshore wind power project in the UK.

JERA is one of the largest power companies in Japan. It aims to develop a number of large-scale offshore wind power projects worldwide. In Taiwan, JERA has been accumulating experience and expertise in development, construction, and operations in a short period through joining projects in different phases of their lifecycle.

Equinor is one the world’s offshore wind developers with significant offshore wind positions in the UK, the US North East and in the Baltic Sea. Equinor believes Japan is a growth market with high potential for both bottom fixed and floating offshore wind. The company has been present in the country since 2018 and has an office in Tokyo.
