A four-year contact has been signed between Moray Offshore Windfarm (East) Ltd and Fern Communications Ltd to support and maintain the Moray East communications system.

During September 2021, Fern Communications Technical Manager James Cleverly and Engineer Luke Gooderham installed Wavecom, the offshore digital radio communications system package for the
Moray East wind farm. Wavecom is designed to provide full field coverage of over 9,000 km², to crew transfer vessels & construction vessels.

Dispatcher stations located in Fraserburgh and operated by
Moray East marine coordinators can communicate with vessels in the field and along the transit routes 24/7. Multi-level redundancies are in place with the aim of ensuring the smooth operation of the communications system.

Located 22 km off the coast of Scotland, the 950 MW
Moray East project is the first of two wind farms to be developed in the Outer Moray Firth Zone. Development is being led by a joint venture between Diamond Green Limited (33.4%), EDPR (33.3 %), ENGIE (23.3%) and CTG (10%).

The project secured a Contract for Difference of £57.50/MWh from the UK Government in 2017, and is due to start generating power in 2021. Construction on the project started in Winter 2018, with commencement of the onshore works. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational in 2022.
