First EA1 export cable installed

DeepOcean has completed the installation of the first export cable at the East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm. The 85km long cable was simultaneously laid and buried from cable lay vessel Maersk Connector, utilising her 7000te carousel and ACP2 cable plough spread.

DeepOcean secured the work from main contractor Nexans in January 2017. Its scope includes the transport, installation and trenching of two export cables. The project is being managed out of the company's Darlington office. Each cable is being installed in two sections; 42km from shore and 43km section to the substation.

The export cable for the project is one of the assets which will be run by the Offshore Transmission Owner (OFTO) once it has been appointed. East Anglia ONE was named as one of the projects in the sixth tender round of the OFTO regime for offshore wind farms in the UK.

The regime, run by the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem), aims to ensure offshore renewable generation projects are economically and efficiently connected to Britain’s electricity grid. For UK wind farms, there must be separate ownership of generation and transmission assets from the wind farm once projects are operational.

The winner of Ofgem's tender process is then responsible for the transmission assets and for transmitting the electricity generated by the turbines to shore. It also entitles them to earn a regulated rate of return on the costs of operating those networks.

Tenders for the electricity transmission link East Anglia ONE and multiple other wind farms in Ofgem's sixth round recently opened.

The offshore substation also forms part of the offshore transmission assets run by the OFTO. East Anglia ONE's offshore substation was installed back in August 2018. It houses all of the electrical equipment needed to distribute the power from the 102 wind turbines back to shore in Suffolk. It was built by Navantia at its facility in the shipyard of Puerto Real, Spain. The installation was supported by the Oleg Strashnov, operated by SHL Offshore Contractors BV.

The £2.5bn East Anglia ONE wind farm is the first of four projects in the East Anglia region to begin construction. It is being realised solely by ScottishPower Renewables. The 714MW array will feature 102 SWT-7.0-154 direct-drive wind turbines, each with a capacity of 7MW. Full commissioning is scheduled for 2020 and the project is expected to meet the energy demands of 500,000 British households annually.
