The first WindFloat Atlantic turbine unit has departed for its final destination off the coast of Portugal. Led by Windplus, the floating turbine will be installed 20 km off the coast of Viana do Castelo in water depths up to 100 m.

The project is backed by the Windplus consortium which is made up of EDP Renováveis, ENGIE, Repsol and Principle Power. It will feature three MHI Vestas
V164-8.0 MW turbines, each with a capacity of 8.33 MW, mounted on Principle Power’s floating semi-submersible platforms.

The foundations have been manufactured by ASM Industries and Navantia and Windar Renovables JV and the second foundation has now arrived to Ferrol from Lisnave. The remaining two turbines will be installed onto the foundations this month.

Full commissioning is still expected before the end of 2019, but this is highly dependent on weather. The project belongs to the Windplus consortium, which is jointly owned by EDP Renováveis (54.4%), ENGIE (25%), Repsol (19.4%) and Principle Power Inc. (1.2%).

The floating technology was implemented in a first of its kind prototype,
WindFloat 1, near Póvoa do Varzim, which was installed back in 2011. The project was a full life cycle demonstration featuring a Vestas V-80 2 MW turbine, and was decommissioned last year.

A commercial phase of approximately 30 turbines producing 150 MW is planned to follow 25 MW project. The WindFloat foundation is also due to be deployed at the Golfe du Lion project in the Mediterranean. The project developers anticipate reaching consent this summer, with commercial operations starting in 2021.
