Formosa 4 & 5 clear EIA review hurdles

The Formosa 4 and Formosa 5 offshore wind projects proposed by Taiwan Team have now both cleared the preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) review process.

On 8 July
Formosa 5 it was revealed that Formosa 5 passed its EIA review and is now Taiwan's first floating offshore wind farm qualifying for the incoming Phase 3 Zonal Development tender. It followed Formosa 4 which passed the review process in June.

The two proposals are being developed by Taiwan Team, a consortium of local Taiwanese companies including Swancor Renewable Energy (SRE), Tien Li Offshore Wind Technology Co Ltd., Yeongguan Group, and JV Energy.


Formosa 5 is anticipated to have capacity of up to 1358 MW and will feature floating turbines. The site covers an area of around 171km2 and is located approximately 18km from shore.

The
Formosa 4 project is to be built 20 km off of Taiwan’s West coast, with export cables landing onshore in Miaoli County. The site will have a total area covering 85 km2, utilising somewhere between 9.5 and 20 MW turbines. It is expected produce enough electricity to supply 1.2 million homes in Taiwan with the maximum installed capacity of up to 1104 MW.

The Round 3 application deadline is set for August 31 2022 with results expected to be announced in Q4 2022.
