For the Borkum Riffgrund II offshore wind farm, all operational processes have been thought out by bringing the relevant stakeholders for each stage of the project to the table. This has led to a new bunker solution on Bold Tern. In the planning phase for this stage, many possible solutions were discussed as to how bunker operations could be done while loading at the same time. Keeping the operation simple was paramount.

The solution decided on consists of using the hydraulic operated boat landing. By using the boat landing that extends below the hull, it can act as a barrier between the vessel and bunker barge therefore there is no large air gap, that limits bunker operations, while the vessel is jacked up.

The bunkering solution begins between two and three hours before high tide, the hydraulic boat landing gear is deployed at this stage, this can take up to 10 minutes. From here the bunker barge moores to Bold Tern and operations can begin.

The bunkering operations stops two to three hours before low tide occurs, and for the Borkum Riffgrund II around 200t - 350t is bunkered, which according to Fred. Olsen only requires a few hours. This leaves buffer time in the case of unforeseen delays.

With this solution it is now possible for Fred. Olsen to perform bunkering operations and load-out of wind turbine components simultaneously without affecting either operation.

Earlier this month the of 56 first turbines were installed at the 450MW wind farm. 36 of the turbines will be anchored to the seabed using monopile foundations, while 20 will be installed on suction bucket jackets.
