Fugro GB Marine Limited (Fugro) is to carry out a geophysical and environmental site investigation in the Irish Sea for the proposed
Awel y Môr (AyM) offshore wind farm site. The wind farm is located to the west of the existing Gwynt y Môr project, off the north coast of Wales, in water depths between 20 m and 40 m Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT).

The geophysical operations at the AyM site are expected to be carried out from the
Fugro Mercator from 15th June 2020 for approximately six to eight weeks. The exact start and finish date will be dependent on the prevailing weather conditions and work progress.

innogy is currently in the design and consenting process for the AyM offshore wind farm. Currently in the early stages, this process, including comprehensive stakeholder and community engagement, is expected to take up to five years, with construction following thereafter, and full operations by 2030.

The project is one of seven offshore wind farm extensions selected by the Crown Estate to progress towards development in August 2019. The 106 km2 extension will be located 12 km off the coast of Llandudno.

The detailed design process for the project commenced in Autumn 2019. Although the turbine type for the project has not yet been chosen, it is expected to have a generating capacity in excess of 500 MW. AyM is expected to share a grid connection with
Gwynt y Môr at Bodelwyddan, and innogy has already received a grid offer from the National Grid.

The Development Consent Order (DCO) application is expected to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in Q2 2022, with a decision anticipated in Q3 2023. As well as a DCO, the project requires a Marine Licence (ML) from Natural Resources Wales. The Planning Inspectorate and innogy intend to run the DCO, Marine License and EIA and HRA assessments in parallel.
