Ground-breaking ceremony for Taiwanese training centre

Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) has held a ground breaking event for the Kaohsiung Marine Science and Technology Industry Innovation Zone at the Kaohsiung Xingda Port in southern Taiwan.

Representatives from local and national authorities attended the event which marked the beginning of construction for the centre which will offer training for the offshore wind sector. It will play host to Maersk Training and research company MARIN and is expected to host more than 500 people each year for training in the offshore wind sector.

The Kaohsiung Xingda Port is operated by Taiwan International Ports Corporation, Taiwan's harbor management company and is being developed the offshore wind industry. It anticipates to create more than 360 employment opportunities and introduce 10 operators to the special zone. The development has a budget of 100 million yuan and is aimed to establish the port as an important base in the Asia-Pacific region.

Taiwan holds strong potential for renewable energies, with its positive government outlook. After deciding to phase out nuclear power by 2025 – with nuclear energy accounting for some 40% of power generation in the past – the Taiwanese government aims to make up for the resulting shortfall by expanding renewable energies, especially offshore wind power. The government aims to install 5.5GW of offshore wind power by 2025.
