High-Res Wind Modeling Offshore U.S West Coast available in WindAXIOM to de-risk new investments

Do you still have some uncertainty associated with the wind resource over the 5 offshore wind leases to be auctioned in California this fall? Are you looking for an alternative numerical weather prediction model to confirm your regional understanding of the changes in wind speeds across the US West Coast? Consider emerging wind areas offshore Oregon.

Upgrades to TGS’ Wind AXIOM platform mean wind resource assessors and business managers can both gain access to large, high resolution, 12-year hindcast models to review their expectations of windspeed, idealised energy output and more over the Humbolt NE, Humbolt SW, Morro Bay NW, Morro Bay C and Morro Bay E leases presented in the California proposed sale notice.

Understanding the spatial and temporal characteristics of the wind resource in California is more important than other offshore geographies because of the steep wind speed gradients that shift position and intensity across the year. This presents a difficult modelling challenge, which TGS has overcome using experienced NWP modelling partner Vaisala and verifying model results against floating lidar measurements.

The influence of these changing wind speeds can have a dramatic impact on the potential energy output of the leases on offer – TGS WindAXIOM predicts that the difference in energy output between the two adjacent Humbolt leases could be greater than 500GWh per year; worth over $100M annually using California’s average electricity price (

Together, these models cover of the wind development areas under consideration by Washington, Oregon and California, who have recently announced the most ambitious offshore wind targets of any state in the US. TGS will support the wind industry with wind model and measurement data through all the future lease rounds on the West Coast.

To explore these wind models in more detail, including the functionality to export time-series and .wrg files anywhere within the model domains, please contact TGS for a demonstration.
