Polish energy company Enea SA and Iberdrola have signed letter of intent to begin negotiations on the joint development of offshore wind farms, with a possible total capacity of up to 3.3 GW.

The letter of intent concerns a potential investment in offshore wind farm projects developed in the area of the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone of the Baltic Sea. The companies begin, on an exclusive basis, negotiations regarding the assessment of the possibility of implementing a joint capital investment in wind farm projects and their joint preparation, construction and operation.

Cooperation on the implementation of wind farms in the Baltic Sea is an important element of the Enea Group's Development Strategy with the company aiming to achieving a renewable energy production share of 22% by 2025 and 33% in 2030.

Enea will assume a minority share in investment projects implemented with Iberdrola. The level of involvement and further details on the scope of cooperation will be determined at the next stages of the negotiation.

Iberdrola is one of the largest offshore wind developers in the world. Over the next few years, offshore wind will be an investment focus for the company, developing a project portfolio of over 10,000 MW. It has a focus on three main regions: the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the United States.

The company is in the process of developing the United States' first commercial-size project,
Vineyard Wind. Just off the coast of Massachusetts, it will produce 800 MW of power to cover the energy needs of a million homes.

In Germany, back in April, the company was awarded contracts to build two new plants in the Baltic Sea, which will produce a total of 486 MW:
Baltic Eagle and Wikinger Süd.

In addition to these new plants, the
Saint Brieuc wind farm, which is located in French waters, is anticipated to be commissioned in 2022. It will have 496 MW of installed power and will be located just off the coast of French Brittany, 20km offshore.

In the UK, its subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables is progressing with the construction of the
East Anglia ONE wind farm which is scheduled to be fully commissioned in 2020. It will have a 714 MW capacity, featuring 102 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 wind turbines. A new base is has been built Lowestoft, UK and will support operations and maintenance of the project. As of today (29 April 2020) all turbines have been installed and commissioning is underway. It is the first of four projects Iberdrola is developing in the East Anglia region to begin construction.

The
East Anglia 1 North, East Anglia 2 and East Anglia 3 projects are being jointly developed as the East Anglia Hub (3,100 MW). Consent applications have been sent and the main engineering, design and site investigation work is now in the development stage. Bids have also been received from wind turbine suppliers and activities have been initiated to purchase electrical components.
