Japanese diets approve wind bill

Both Japanese National Diets have approved a new bill paving the way offshore wind power in Japanese waters. The new legislation provides the Japanese Cabinet with the ability to draw up a policy to promote the use of Japan’s territorial waters outside the port-related areas for the development of renewable energy.

The Diets will include two supplementary resolutions within the bill, one which looks after the interests of the fishing industry and the other mandates that winning bidders earmark funds for decommissioning.

Following the approval, the diets will take three months to finalise the bill and it is expected to enter into force in spring 2019. An auction for candidate zones is anticipated to follow in summer 2019.
