JFMS supports tidal installation

James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS) has completed its work for marine energy developer Minesto for a Welsh tidal energy project. The company supported the installation of the developer’s 500kW-rated DG500 tidal energy device at a site in Holyhead Deep, off Anglesey in north Wales.

JFMS joined the project team onshore in Holyhead, where preparations were made to install an tidal turbine substructure, including a ballast-able gravity base and subsea cabling. Operations were performed from the MV Island Vanguard, an Anchor Handing Tug Supply Vessel and the MV C-Fenna. JFMS provided a number of specialists including a subsea operations manager, DP supervisor, heavy lift experts, project engineers and riggers.

This is the first utility-scale device to be installed by Minesto following several years of testing prototypes – and the first of a planned 10MW array in Holyhead Deep. With all the components and systems needed for power delivery now in place to start energy production.

The second phase included the installation of a micro grid system (MGS) buoy – which receives the electricity generated and analyses power output and performance – and connects to the DG500 device via an umbilical tether and gravity base.
