Kincardine prepares for installation

Preparations for installation of the first floating wind turbine for the 50MW Kincardine project are progressing. The ‘float-off’ of the WindFloat prototype foundation took place yesterday (11th) off the coast of Edinburgh.

According to sources, the vessel Atlantic Kestrelwill tug the structure to Dundee for final assembly of the V80-2MW turbine. All marine operations are being carried out by Bourbon who are due to commence installation of the moorings imminently followed by ‘hook-up’ of the turbine in August.

Since consent was granted in early 2017 the project has suffered a number of delays and the decision to install the 2MW turbine is crucial for the developer to meet the Renewables Obligation Certificate deadline this autumn.

Kincardine Offshore Windfarm Ltd. is currently waiting for the Scottish Minister's decision on a second consent variation to remove the individual turbine generating capacity limit (provided that the total permitted generating capacity must not exceed 50 MW). This application follows a variation request in November 2017 to increase the maximum turbine capacity from 8MW to 8.4MW. KOWL stated that there are now turbines which have a higher rated capacity with no impact to the physical dimensions than those previously assessed.

According to the construction plan the 2MW turbine will initially be installed for up to 3 years with possible extension if the foundation is recertified. Installation of a further six turbines will take place over two campaigns in 2019 and 2020.
