KNOC calls in contractors for Donghae 1

The Korea National Oil Company (KNOC) has revealed four companies it is signing up this month (September 2020) to help develop the 200 MW Donghae 1 floating wind farm. This project will be built on the Donghae gas plant after its planned 2022 closure, and could well be South Korea’s first commercial scale floating wind farm.

The first of these four companies, Hyundai Heavy Industries, will be responsible for the design, manufacture, and installation of the floating foundations. The Mutual Cooperation Business Agreement Ceremony (pictured) where contracts with Hyundai were signed, was staged on Tuesday (8^th September).

A deal with Doosan Heavy Industries was announced today (10^th September). This will see Doosan provide the floating wind turbines, which will be installed by KNOC.

Other suppliers include POSCO and LS Cable & System, both of which are expected to announce contracts later this month. POSCO, based in Pohang, is a leading steel-making company, and LS Cable & System announced its second cable factor in Donghae last year.

The Donghae 1 offshore wind farm is expected to be the first step in a planned 6 GW development in the area. KNOC is developing it in a consortium with Korea East West Power and Equinor.

Under South Korea’s Green New Deal, the country is targeting at least 12 GW of offshore wind by 2030. As 4C Offshore outlined in its latest subscriber-only Market Overview, one of the biggest barriers to offshore wind development is resident acceptance; floating wind solutions – which are further out to sea and less likely to impact local communities or citizens – have a key role to play.
