Lithuanian Government concludes surveys ahead of offshore wind tender

The Lithuanian Government announced that the initial research results of the area of the Baltic seabed where it aims to tender future offshore wind developments have shown the seabed is suitable for grounded foundations.

Geophysical and geo-technical investigations of the seabed are carried out in order to provide the participants of the future tender with data about the structure of the seabed. Research is carried out by UAB "Geobaltic" and UAB "Garant Diving", a group of service providers operating under a joint contract.

Using two research ships - Klaipėda University's ship "Mintis" and Garant Diving's ship "Baltic Explorer", the research team explored an area of almost 137.5 square km. The report provides detailed information on the seabed surveys carried out, which consisted of surface hydrographic and shallow geophysical seabed surveys. Based on the conducted research, the researchers provided recommendations for deep and shallow wells and static sounding locations. Seabed research will continue.

The Lithuanian government has previously announced plans to support the development of an offshore wind farm with a capacity of up to 700 MW in the Baltic Sea. The tender for the site is expected to take place in September 2023. The project is planned to be constructed by 2030 in a Baltic Sea territory nearly 30 km from the shore. A wind farm of this capacity in the Baltic Sea is expected to produce approximately 2.5-3 TWh of electricity per year, which is nearly a quarter of Lithuania’s current electricity demand.
