Malta is set to build its second interconnector with Italy after receiving approval from its cabinet. The new 200 MW interconnector will run parallel to the existing submarine cable, connecting Malta with Ragusa (Italy). The project is expected to cost €170 million.

While addressing a press conference at the Enemalta station in Magħtab (Malta) on Tuesday, the Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said that the electricity demand  has increased by 18 % in the past four years, and expected to increase more with the introduction of electric vehicles, and shore to ship supply. A study conducted by an international consultancy firm,  France Electric, has revealed that that the best way to meet the growing electricity demand was through a second interconnector.

The existing interconnector facilities in Malta and Ragusa have the capability to support a second cable, the minister added.

The government also explored the options of interconnections with other countries, including Tunisia, Greece, and other parts of Italy. However, Sicily appeared as the most feasible option for the interconnector.

The new interconnector project will help to cut emissions from the energy sector by 58%, said Dalli.

In the next phase, seabed studies will be carried out to prepare technical plans of the project. An expression of interest will be issued, following the completion of all necessary environmental and planning permits. The link is expected to be completed in 2025.

The existing
Malta-Sicily interconnector is a 200 MW HVAC interconnector. The 120 km link was commissioned in 2015.
