TasNetworks has initiated the pre-qualification round for the upcoming procurement stage for the HVDC components of 1.5 GW Marinus link. The proposed link will run between Heybridge in North West Tasmania and the Latrobe Valley in Victoria.

The pre-qualification process for HVDC components consists, ~250 km of submarine HVDC cables, ~90 km of HVDC underground cables, and two converter stations in Tasmania and Victoria. The preliminary strategy for the project award includes the design, manufacture, testing, transportation, supply, installation and commissioning of: HVDC submarine cables, including landfall Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD); HVDC land cables, excluding civil trenching and land HDD; and HVDC Voltage Source Conversion (VSC) converter stations (Tasmania and Victoria).

TasNetworks is planning to build the
project in two stages of 750 MW each: the first stage is scheduled to commission in 2027/28, and the second stage is targeted to commission in 2029/30.

The pre-qualification documents are expected to be available to download from TasNetworks’ E-Procurement Portal, from Friday 6th August 2021, with the closing date on Friday 24th September 2021. The pre-qualification round has been planned to conclude in November 2021. The short-listed parties will be then invited to participate in tender process, which is expected to start in late March 2022.

Contracts will be awarded in late 2023 or early 2024, and are subject to the approval of Final Investment Decision (FID), which is anticipated in end-2023. Companies are required to register with ‘
Tenderlink’ to participate in the pre qualification.
