MingYang Smart Energy scores 11MW order for floating project

MingYang Smart Energy (MYSE) has secured an 11MW order for an offshore floating wind power pilot project in Northern European waters.

To be supplied to an undisclosed European offshore wind developer, the installation is scheduled to be completed in 2023.

The MySE11-203 is among the world's biggest hybrid drive wind turbines. Based on the IEC wind class IB, it features a rotor diameter of 203 meters and 99-meter long carbon-glass hybrid blades with a swept area of 32,365 m².

Commenting on the award, MYSE stated: "Floating wind has shown to be a viable solution to tap offshore wind resources. This project will give vital insights into MingYang’s 11MW Hybrid Drive offshore technology in a floating system application in Europe's deep-sea regions, and while also paving the way for its future deployment in Europe."

Earlier this year, MYSE unveiled a new turbine model, with a nameplate capacity of 16 MW. With a 242-metre diameter rotor, the turbine is Designed for high-wind IEC IB including typhoon-class IEC TC and features 118-metre-long blades, and a 46,000 m2 swept area equivalent of more than six fields.

According to MYSE, a single 16.0-242 turbine can generate 80,000 MWh of electricity every year, enough to power more than 20,000 households. In comparison, it produces 45% more energy than the MySE 11.0-203.

It is scheduled for full prototype roll-out in 2022, to be followed by prototype installation in the first half of 2023 and commercial production in the first half of 2024.
