Ministry of Environment halted the South Aegean wind and interconnector projects

In a joint letter to the Prime Minister of Greece and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, 12 environmental NGOs and Scientific Societies call for the cancellation of wind farm development plans on 14 protected islets in the South Aegean.
The planned installation of three Aeolian Power Plants (ASPIE) with a total of 104 wind turbines (3MW-6MW each) with associated 70 km of road network, 14 ports, 14 heliports, several interconnectors, permanent lighting, buildings and reservoirs for a construction period of at least 5 years has been recognised a key issue in protecting biodiversity in Greece.

The joint press release of 15 organizations states, this pharaonic project will cause irreversible environmental damage and permanently alter the character of the islets, destroying protected habitats and leading to the extinction of entire colonies of protected species of birds and other rare and / or endemic species, which exclusively inhabit these islets. However, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Special Environmental Assessment (SEA), using arbitrary criteria and low quality documentation, both reach the outrageous conclusion that the development will have "small impact" on these untouched islets.

In addition, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) has also raised substantial concerns about natural security and safety of coastal shipping in some of the islets in question.

Project “AIGAIO”, as it is called, is a world scale, 582MW wind project, located on deserted rocky islets of the Dodecanese Islands and the Cyclades. The project includes 138 turbines on 23 islets. The interconnection of the AEGEAN Project has been included in The Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) of 2014, 2016 and 2018 under the title “Southern Aegean Interconnector (SAI).
