NKT completes HVDC onshore cable repair

NKT reports that it has concluded a repair operation on the Kontiskan-1 interconnector, which connects Denmark and Sweden.

Swedish grid operator Svenska Kraftnät called on NKT after a fault was detected on the 285 kV HVDC power cable system. The fault was determined to be down to an external impact close to the Billdal transformer station in Gothenburg, Sweden. NKT completed the repair operation at the end of March.

“The uptime of the interconnecting power cable systems is central to the transition to renewable energy, and here fast and efficient repair operations play a key role. We are pleased to continue the collaboration with Svenska Kraftnät to help bring Kontiskan-1 back in operation and once again demonstrate our strong execution capabilities and quick mobilization,” said Axel Barnekow Widmark, Executive Vice President and Head of Service in NKT.

“We are very satisfied with the performance of NKT providing a short response time, well performed fault localization and cable repair,” added Sofia Högfeldt, Maintenance Engineer for power cables at Svenska Kraftnät.

NKT’s scope of work included fault location, civil works, repair of the power cable, Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) measurements after the repair, and a cable dissection and analysis currently under development.

Kontiskan-1 was installed in 1969, between Denmark and Sweden, with the aim of enabling energy connection between the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe. A second interconnector, Kontiskan-2, was inaugurated in 1988, adding to the current power rating of 550 MW.
