The UK Government has today (11 February 2022), once again awarded planning consent for Vattenfall’s Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Farm. Consent for Norfolk Vanguard follows consent for sister project Norfolk Boreas last year.

The decision completes consent for the entire Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone. The 3.6 GW zone will feature between 180 and 312 turbines installed 47 km offshore. Covering an area of 1,307 km2 it is expected to produce first power from Mid 2020s. The zone is expected to produce enough power annually for the equivalent of 3.9 million UK homes.

Helene Biström, Head of Business Area Wind at Vattenfall, said: “Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas are industry leading projects, with their designs coordinated to minimise the impact on the environment and communities. We are very pleased to receive consent for Norfolk Vanguard. Although the decision was unfortunately made too late to enable us to bid this project in to the current CfD auction round 4, we will now look into potential opportunities to progress this project, working closely with the supply chain and local communities.”

Danielle Lane, UK Country Manager for Vattenfall, said: “Today is a major step forward for a project that will help to unlock the huge potential of offshore wind for the UK. We’re committed to making sure that these projects bring real, lasting benefit to the East of England – with jobs, supply chain and skills investment throughout construction and operation.”

“We’ll be working even more closely now with local communities as we begin to take the project towards construction. This will include preparatory works on the ground, but also work with our local partners to make sure we get our plans absolutely right to maximise benefits to the region.”

Last year, the
Norfolk Vanguard suffered a setback with the UK High Court has quashing its original planning consent for which secured consent in July 2020. The High Court ruled in the favour of a local resident, who claimed that the Secretary of State unlawfully excluded cumulative effects of Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas project in its decision to approve Norfolk Vanguard.  The Secretary of State has now once again approved Vattenfall's application for planning consent for Norfolk Vanguard based on its "national need" for the project.
