Norther substation sets sail

The Offshore High Voltage Station (OHVS) for the Norther offshore wind farm has set sail towards the project site. It was built at the ENGIE Fabricom's facility in Hoboken in consortium with Smulders and CG.

The substation topside measures 32m length, 21m in height and weighs 1,300 tons. It is the 22nd substation that was built at Hoboken, with the others being destined for wind farms in the UK, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

ENGIE Fabricom was responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the substation. The works also included the installation of low voltage equipment, the transport and installation. Smulders was responsible for the steel construction of the OHVS and its transition piece (TP) foundation. CG designed, fabricated, installed and commissioned the high and medium voltage systems including the control and security systems of the platform.

The OHVS is one of the key elements in the functioning of an offshore wind farm because it connects the individual wind turbines to the onshore grid. The power generated by the wind turbines (33kV) is transported to this substation where it is converted to a voltage of 220kV and then delivered to the shore through one cable. Onshore it will connect to the Belgian grid through Elia’s Stevin high-voltage station.

The €1.2bn Norther wind farm is being constructed 23km from the Belgian port of Zeebruges and is expected to be operational in 2019. It is owned by Elicio, Eneco & Diamond Generating Europe and is currently poised to be the largest project off the Belgian coast. The annual output of the wind farm is forecasted at 1.4 billion kWh, enough to supply 400,000 households.
