Northern Offshore Group and NYK Line have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate within the offshore wind industry. It primarily concerns the building and operating of Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs).

Both NYK Line and N-O-S aim to participate in the nascent offshore wind market in Japan. The objective of the MoU is to define the basic terms of a joint study to build and operate CTVs in Japan.

”Northern Offshore Services has during the last couple of years performed an extensive research of the global offshore wind market and its opportunities. The joint effort with NYK Line will be a steppingstone for N-O-S to be a real player in the global offshore wind market and we are honoured that the esteemed company NYK Line has chosen to work with us”,
said David Kristensson, CEO of Northern Offshore Services.

“We are very pleased to collaborate with Northern Offshore Group AB, which has expertise in offshore wind power projects in Europe. Making use of the NYK Group’s experience as a Japanese shipping company, together with our local network, we will promote renewable energy business in Japan and overseas, thus actively contributing to achieving the SDGs through the group’s business activities,”
said Svein Steimler, corporate officer at NYK Group.

NYK line was founded in 1885 and operates over 700 major ocean vessels, including bulk carriers, car carriers, containership, LNG carriers, tankers and others, as well as fleets of planes and trucks. The NYK Group is based in Tokyo and has regional headquarters in London, New York / New Jersey, Singapore, and Shanghai.

Northern Offshore Group operates about 60 vessels, most of which are CTV’s, and offers onshore technical and commercial management services. The Group’s head office is located in Gothenburg, Sweden with branch offices in Hamburg, Copenhagen, Lowestoft and Conwy. The group comprises several privately owned companies with operations in the marine industry. This includes Northern Offshore Services, a subcontractor to the international offshore wind industry providing CTV support.

4C Offshore estimates that ~2.9 GW of offshore wind could be underway in Japan by 2030, based on projects in the pipeline. Later this year the Japanese government is expected to launch it first offshore wind auction with winners to be announced by the end of the year.
