Norway to open wind talks

The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy plans to open a hearing on the potential of offering Utsira North, an area off the coast of Rogaland, for applications for offshore wind power. In addition input will be requested for the Sørlige Nordsjø II, an area of the Southern North Sea.

Combined, the two sites could host up to 3.5 GW of offshore wind turbines. As part of the consultation, the Ministry will also propose a regulation to the marine energy law. The regulations provide further provisions on the licensing process. The goal is for Norwegian companies to increase exports of goods and services to this industry.

Minister Kjell-Bjørge Freiberg stated that Utsira Nord is suitable for floating offshore wind power. The Norwegian Government presented a strategy for floating offshore wind power in the government budget for 2018.

"Offshore wind power offers great opportunities for Norwegian companies. Norway can build on unique experience from the oil and gas industry, shipping, shipbuilding and renewable energy. The cost of wind power has fallen a lot, and it is likely that they will fall further,"
said Minister Freiberg.

Norway is home to three offshore wind demonstration projects:
UNITECH Zefyros by Hywind Technology, Karmøy (fixed) and Karmøy (floating).
