NRG kicks off onshore cable works for TenneT

NRG will start onshore works for the Hollandse Kust Noord grid connection later this month in The Netherlands.

Onshore cables will connect the Hollandse Kust Noord / West Alpha offshore wind farms to TenneT's national high-voltage grid. The onshore route is approximately 10 km and runs from the sea (near the beach near Noorderbad) via the future transformer station (on the site between the Tussenwijkweg and Tata Steel) to the existing high-voltage station near the A9.

At the end of November, NRG will commence horizontal directional drilling in Beverwijk for laying the onshore cables. Until the end of 2022, NRG will be working at various locations in Wijk aan Zee and Beverwijk.

“Once the temporary work road has been constructed and the work location has been set up, we want to start the first four drillings at the end of November / early December. These will go from the estate to the future transformer station on the former site of Tata Steel. Each drilling takes approximately two weeks. When those drillings are finished, we turn the drilling machine around and then drill four times to the work site near Holland at its narrowest ” said Project manager Mark de Bruijn.

TenneT is responsible for the offshore and onshore grid connection for the Hollandse Kust Noord / West Alpha offshore wind farms including offshore platforms and cabling. Each connection is based on TenneT's standardised HVAC connection concept with a 700 MW transmission capacity.

In July the Hollandse Kust Noord  project was awarded to the CrossWind consortium, a joint venture between Shell in the Netherlands and Eneco. The consortium is including five technology demonstrations in the project which could be implemented at full-scale in the future. It includes a floating solar park; short-term battery storage; turbines that are optimally tuned to the network to minimise the negative ‘wake’-effects that wind turbines have on each other; ‘green hydrogen’ made by electrolysis as a further storage technique.

The tender for the Hollandse Kust West wind farm is still due to be held Q2 2021 and close Q3 2021. TenneT will be required to build a second grid connection (Hollandse Kust West Beta) to connect the 1.4 GW wind farm.

The Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm will be operational in 2023 and the Hollandse Kust West wind farm in 2024.
