ØrstedAberdeen based engineering firm, Nucore Group, is broadening its focus within the energy industry, most notably in offshore wind, as it confirms a number of successful projects and contract awards within the sector.  

The group protects and maintains some of the UK’s wind farms providing fire suppression and safety systems.

Last month the group’s two firms, Oteac Ltd and HVAC & Refrigeration Engineering Ltd, commenced contracts for the maintenance of fire and gas detection and suppression systems, FGas checks and HVAC equipment on the Walney 3 and Walney 4 substations for the Walney Extension offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.

Graham Boyne, Offshore Sales Manager commented: “The message at the All Energy conference in Glasgow earlier this month was about strengthening the supply chain in the renewables sector.  As a group, we are well placed to provide combined services incorporating the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of fire suppression, safety and HVAC systems for wind farms across Europe.”

In addition, Oteac recently secured a 4-year contract with Equinor (formerly Statoil) to deliver servicing and maintenance of fire and gas systems on the Sheringham Shoal windfarm transformer platform, off the coast of Sheringham, North Norfolk.

As part of the same project, Oteac had previously designed, supplied, installed and commissioned fire protection and detection on this asset and its onshore control station and will continue to inspect and maintain the equipment on a bi-annual basis, protecting infrastructure and personnel.

The wind farm which has been fully commissioned for over five years includes 88 turbines, two 900-tonne offshore sub-stations and has a capacity of 317MW. It powers 220,000 British homes with clean energy, resulting in a reduction of around 500,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

Supporting its expansion in offshore wind, Oteac has installed a new Compressed Air Foam (CAF) system for an unnamed UK wind farm.

It protects the electrical transformers on-board the offshore wind farm substation. When in use, the system detects fire using high integrity flame detection and voting logic.

In the event of a fire, the system creates a blanket of foam to quickly extinguish a fire, excluding oxygen, cooling and containing the fire within the vicinity.  The environmentally benign foam, produced by Solberg.

Dave Fyfe, Offshore Service Manager said: “Transformers contain oil and coolants known to present a potential fire risk to personnel and assets – the self-contained compressed air foam system (CAF) helps mitigate the risk to as low as reasonably practicable.  

The industry has evolved with operators investing heavily in the design, construction and technology used in the production of wind turbines and are now deploying third generation turbines.  These are significantly more expensive and powerful than the first generation turbines therefore requiring fewer turbines to generate the same levels of power.  It is critical for the supporting transformer platforms and substations, which are vital to the operational productivity and integrity of a wind farm, to have sufficient fire protection to minimise risk and liability to these investments.”
