Offshore construction is officially underway at the
Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farms with the installation of the first monopile. A total of 70 monopiles will be installed by Van Oord over the coming months, around 18km off the coast at Egmond aan Zee.

Construction work is taking place 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The installation of the monopiles is expected to be completed by mid-2023. For the installation of the monopiles, Van Oord is teaming up with DEME who will deploy its offshore installation vessel Innovation.

To avoid erosion, Van Oord has already installed scour protection using its flexible fallpipe vessel
Nordnes. Other Van Oord vessels that will be deployed are the offshore installation vessel MPI Resolution, cable-laying vessel Nexus and trencher Dig-It.

CrossWind, a joint-venture between Shell and Eneco, contracted Van Oord in 2020. As Balance of Plant contractor, Van Oord’s activities encompass the design, engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the foundations, inter array cables and transportation and installation of the wind turbines.

"We are very pleased to have achieved this important milestone. Thanks to the committed and experienced project teams, the installation of the monopiles started about 10 weeks earlier than originally planned,"
said Roeland Ris, Project Director Van Oord.

Tjalling de Bruin, Crosswind’s CEO and project director of Hollandse Kust Noord, stated: "This is the first step towards the realisation of a total installed capacity of 759 MW by the end of 2023 when the wind farm will come on stream. This corresponds to the production of at least 3.3 TWh of green energy per year, with which we can fulfil some 2.8% of the electricity demand in the Netherlands. I am extremely proud of being able contribute to accelerating the energy transition and improving the security of supply in this way together with the CrossWind team."

Wind farm owner CrossWind will be implementing several innovations in the construction of the wind farm, such as offshore hydrogen production and floating solar panels. These innovations aim to enable this first smart wind farm in the Netherlands to contribute significantly to accelerating the energy transition.

The wind turbines that will be installed on the monopiles will be part of the first smart wind farm in the Netherlands.

Tjalling de Bruin explains: "The wind doesn't always blow equally hard everywhere. How do you ensure that green electricity can still be supplied even when wind speeds are low? Together with our partners, we are exploring  five different innovations designed to meet these challenges. In this way we are trying to ensure that future offshore wind farms will form a constant power supply regardless of how hard the wind blows, and helping to keep the electricity grid stable."

The Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm wind farm is expected to be operational by 2023 with an installed capacity of 759 MW, generating at least 3.3 TWh per year. The wind farm will be located 18.5km off the Dutch coast, near the town of Egmond aan Zee. Is it being developed subsidy-free by the CrossWind consortium, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco. It will consist of 60 Siemens Gamesa
SG 11.0-200 DD turbines.
