The UK Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has opened a consultation on the needs case and efficient costs of SP Transmission’s (SPT’s) plans to carry out infrastructure work to enable connection of the Eastern High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable link and offshore wind generation at Branxton Substation.

Ofgem would like views from people with an interest in electricity transmission and distribution networks. It would also welcome responses from other stakeholders and the public. Responses are required by 11 April 2022 and consultation documents can be seen
here.

The
2 GW Eastern HVDC Link will be a 155 km long electricity connection between Torness and Hawthorn Pit. The proposed link is scheduled to be completed by 2027, with cable installation expected in 2026.

The Branxton Substation is also the anticipated grid connection point for part of the
Berwick Bank wind farm. The project already at an advanced stage of development and has a planning application which is expected to go to the Scottish Government in spring 2022. If consented and green-lit for construction, it could begin generating electricity in the second half of this decade.
