Onshore works underway at nearshore lake project

This story first appeared earlier this week in our subscriber exclusive Offshore Update newsletter.

Onshore construction is underway at the 382.7 MW Windpark Fryslân. The project is located on the artificial lake IJsselmeer, about 6 km from the Frisian IJsselmeer coast, near the Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands. Visser & Smit Hanab was awarded a €30 million contract in 2018 and is responsible for the installation of the 110 kV onshore export cabling, which will connect the wind farm to the Breezanddijk transformer station and then TenneT’s grid connection point at Bolsward.

The company is working on drilling beneath a road and cycle path to install a pipe for the cable to eventually be pulled through. 14 casing pipes, each with a length of just over 4.2 km, were also laid in March. Construction of the onshore transformer station will start in September 2019 for completion by late 2020. Construction is being overseen by Ventolines BV, which has been subcontracted to develop the project by Windpark Fryslân BV.

The nearshore wind farm will feature 89 SWT-DD-130 turbines, each with a rated capacity of 4.3 MW and a rotor diameter of 130 metres. Siemens Gamesa has been awarded the contract for the design, fabrication, and commissioning of the wind turbines and the onshore substation at Breezanddijk. Van Oord is responsible for the installation of the turbines as well as the design, manufacture and installation of the wind farm’s foundations and cables.

These contracts are conditional on the project reaching financial close, expected during Q3 2019. The wind farm is due to be operational by mid-2021. Earlier this month, the developer signed a 15-year PPA with Eneco for 1,500 GWh/year.

The project is independent of the national offshore wind regime, and will be realised in order to contribute to the Province of Friesland’s goals of achieving 16% or 530.5MW renewable energy generation with Windpark Fryslân expected to account for more than 60% of this target.
