Osbit delivers monopile upending hinge to Boskalis

Osbit's upending hinge, on board the Boskalis Bokalift 2 vessel.

Osbit, a member company in Venterra Group and offshore wind technology supplier, has successfully delivered a monopile upending hinge to Boskalis to support its latest operations in the East Coast of the US.

The hinge has been designed to upend offshore wind monopile foundations from their stowed horizontal position to a vertical position, securely restraining the pile against environmental loading throughout the process as it rotates through the water column.

The hinge is initially being used by Boskalis on a project to install a significant number of monopile foundations. The system handles monopiles with a variety of diameters, supporting Boskalis in maximising opportunities on future wind farms.

The system is installed onto Boskalis' Bokalift 2 vessel and is contributing to a vital part of the monopile installation process. The hinge, which itself weighs 1,500 tons when fully assembled, works in tandem with the vessel's crane to ensure monopile foundations are manipulated in a safe and controlled manner prior to hammering into the seabed.

Osbit's Sales Director, Ben Webster, commented: “This is the third upending hinge system Osbit will supply and is our first for Boskalis. We are delighted to have successfully delivered this important project, which will enable Boskalis to carry out installation activities in the rapidly growing US offshore wind market.
