Ørsted and OVO Energy have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the electricity produced by the Barrow offshore wind farm. This agreement means that OVO will buy 100% of the power that Barrow generates from February 2021.

By the end of 2021, OVO Energy is aiming to increase the amount of renewable electricity backed by UK renewable electricity generation to almost 40%.

Ben Blake, CEO of OVO Energy, said: “We’re proud to work with Ørsted on a major power purchase agreement. In the future, we’re committed to exploring how we can source more energy from renewable generation here in the UK, supporting the industry and helping to drive down costs.”

Barrow was one of the first offshore wind farms built in the UK. It is located in the East Irish Sea, approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) south-west of Walney Island, near Barrow-in-Furness. It comprises of 30 V90-3.0 MW turbines with a combined total capacity of 90 MW.

The project is 100% owned by Ørsted and its construction started in May 2005, with full commissioning on 22 September 2006.

Kyle Worthington, Head of Power Origination at Ørsted, said: “We’re delighted to begin this relationship with OVO Energy and help the UK move towards a greener, more climate-friendly energy system. It is great to see major suppliers like OVO committing to increase the amount of electricity they are sourcing from renewable generators and we are very happy to help them on this journey.”

”It’s great to see our well-established assets such as Barrow offshore wind farm continuing to provide value to new customers. This agreement underlines the value of our investment during the last decade and of Ørsted’s world-class Operations & Maintenance and Asset Management teams, keeping more mature assets productive and efficient for the foreseeable future”
said Hugh Yendole, Director of Barrow Offshore Wind.
