The planning approval process has been initiated for the land part of the 400 kV KONTEK interconnector. The application for 14 km of replacement land cable section was submitted to the Ministry of Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalization in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania this week. The replacement land cable runs between the landing site in Markgrafenheide and the transformer station in Bentwisch.

Commissioned in 1995, the 170 km long
KONTEK cable is an HVDC transmission line between Bjæverskov (Eastern Denmark) and Bentwisch (Germany). The link connects the asynchronously operated transmission grids of Energinet with 50Hertz. The 600 MW long submarine part of the cable was replaced in 2010. The new mass impregnated cables replaced the previous oil-filled KONTEK cable.

The land cable has reached the end of its operating life now. The new cable will be laid parallel to the existing route. The existing route will be rebuilt after the completion of new route.

The construction work of the replacement land
cable will commence once the licensing authority checks that the application documents are complete, and is expected either in the second half of 2022 or in the first half of 2023.
