Pre-qualification for Thor Tender to launch imminently

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) is preparing to launch the next phase of the Thor offshore wind tender this quarter.

The Thor wind area is located 20 km off the West Coast of Jutland in North Sea and will be the first of three projects included in the 2018 Energy Agreement to be built over the next decade.

The DEA published a prior information notice in March, to notify the market as widely as possible about the forthcoming tender.

The DEA has informed 4C Offshore that it remains on track to launch the next phase of the tender process by the end of Q3 2020. This includes publication of the contract notice, the complete tender conditions and the launch of the pre-qualification phase.

Companies will be able to put themselves forwards to pre-qualify during Q4 2020. Overall ten candidates are expected to be pre-qualified, based on experience and financial and technical capacity. Final tender materials will be published in Q3 2021 and the tender will close in Q4 2021.

The concession winner will receive subsidies in the form of a price premium, based on a 20-year CfD scheme, from the Danish State. The developer will then need to complete a full environmental impact assessment (EIA) and apply for the necessary consents before starting construction.

When commissioned in 2027, the project will have a capacity of 800-1,000 MW making it the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark.
