RES scores Moray East contract

RES has won a contract to provide control point, balancing and asset monitoring services during commissioning and early operations at the 950 MW Moray East offshore wind farm.

RES’s 24/7/365 control centre, based in Glasgow, will work as the interface between Moray East and National Grid to support the energisation of 100 turbines at the offshore wind farm. RES will also act as the eyes and ears of the wind farm during early operations to monitor the performance of the project and escalate faults if they occur.

The contract to support the HV commissioning requires RES’s control centre to react 24/7 to requests from National Grid and relay instructions directly to Operations Engineers working on the project. Using live data from the wind farm, RES’s operational controllers will also monitor the asset during early operations to escalate faults, helping to promptly bring turbines back online.

RES’s control centre will also provide control point services under the balancing mechanism for Moray East Offshore Wind Farm, where the first turbine was installed in January.

The skills and experience of our Operational Controllers will not only ensure Moray East delivers full grid compliance, but we’ll also support the wind farm to transition to a fully operational asset as quickly as possible.”

Moray East is being developed by Moray Offshore Windfarm East Ltd (MOWEL), a joint venture company owned by Diamond Green Limited (33.4%), EDPR (33.3 %), ENGIE (23.3%) and CTG (10%). It will feature 100 MHI Vestas V164-9.5 MW turbines and three offshore substations which are to be installed around 22km from the coast in the Moray Firth, Scotland.

The project secured a Contract for Difference of £57.50/MWh from the UK Government in 2017, and is due to start generating power in 2021. Construction on the project started in Winter 2018, with commencement of the onshore works and the wind farm is expected to be fully operational in 2022.
