RWE expands battery storage to enhance offshore wind intergration

RWE is making significant strides in its battery storage business, with a keen focus on offshore wind energy integration. The company has recently announced its investment decision for a substantial Dutch battery storage project, boasting an installed power capacity of 35 MW and a storage capacity of 41 MWh. This innovative venture will see the installation of 110 lithium-ion battery racks at RWE's biomass plant in Eemshaven, covering an area of approximately 3,000 square metres, with an investment of around 24 million euros.

The key objective of this battery storage project is to create a portfolio of demand assets that can effectively harness and optimize the variable power generation of the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, situated off the coast of the Netherlands. RWE secured the OranjeWind offshore wind project in 2022, outlining a comprehensive system integration strategy that seamlessly combines the wind farm's output with green hydrogen generation and advanced battery storage solutions.

Roger Miesen, CEO of RWE Generation and Country Chair for the Netherlands, emphasized the increasing importance of flexible battery storage in the evolving energy landscape, particularly with the growing share of renewable energies. He stated: "With this large-scale project, RWE is gaining experience in the marketing of energy storage systems on the Dutch energy markets and is actively contributing towards stabilizing the Dutch electricity grid."

The planned battery storage facility will be capable of operating at its full 35 MW capacity for over an hour, a capacity sufficient to charge approximately 800 electric vehicles. It has been engineered to be intricately integrated with RWE's existing power plants in the Netherlands, enabling precise management of balancing energy resources. This system can supply energy either individually or collectively, depending on requirements, ensuring the grid's frequency remains stable.

Battery storage systems play a pivotal role in the energy transition by storing surplus electricity generated from renewable sources and releasing it when needed. RWE, committed to leading the charge in the transition to renewable energy, is actively developing, constructing, and operating battery storage projects in Europe, Australia, and the United States. The company has set ambitious goals, aiming to build more than 3 GW of battery storage capacity by 2030. Drawing on its extensive experience in this field, RWE manages all aspects of these projects, including detailed planning, modeling, system integration, and commissioning.
