According to reports form the Norwegian Maritme Directorate (Sjøfartsdirektoratet), the Saipem 7000 heavy lift crane vessel has suffered damage and is listing in waters near Stavanger. Local media claims it is the result of equipment failure during lifting operations.

There were 275 people on board when the incident occurred. Everyone has since been evacuated and accounted for, and no injuries have been reported. The Norwegian Maritime Directorate said it will follow up with inspections and port state control as soon as possible.

Police also reported that a nearby barge has sustained damage and is at risk of sinking.

Measuring nearly 200 metres in length, the vessel is owned by Saipem S.p.A. and can handle pipelaying in water depths greater than 2,000m and heavy lift operations of up to 14,000 tonnes. It was delivered back in 1987.

Before pausing for maintenance yesterday, the vessel was working on an installation contract from Seaway 7 related to the
Seagreen offshore wind farm, a 1,075MW joint venture project between SSE Renewables (49%) and Total (51%) off the East coast of Scotland. The scope of work entails the installation of 114 foundations for an equivalent number of wind turbines.
