Sembcorp Marine has inked an agreement with Ørsted Wind Power subsidiary Optimus Wind Limited for engineering, procurement, construction, hook-up and commissioning works on two topsides to be deployed at Hornsea Project Two.

With a combined weight of approximately 8,700 tonnes, the two topsides will be fabricated at Sembcorp Marine’s integrated yard facilities for delivery in the first quarter of 2021.

Sembcorp Marine Head of Offshore Platforms Mr Samuel Wong commented, “Sembcorp Marine is honoured to have the customer’s trust in our ability to deliver the topsides safely, on time and with the desired quality. We are very grateful to Ørsted and Optimus for the contract, and for the opportunity to progress further in the competitive offshore renewable energy market.”

Hornsea Project Two is in the early stages of construction and when complete in 2022 will be the biggest offshore wind farm in the world. It secured a Contract for Difference in September 2017. The 1.4GW project will be located 89km off the Yorkshire Coast and will feature 165 Siemens Gamesa turbines. It is expected to be capable of supplying clean electricity to well over 1.3 million homes across the UK.

Ørsted is currently constructing
Hornsea Project One, located 120km off the Yorkshire coast. It will span an area of approximately 407km2. Foundation installation is underway and a total of 174 turbine foundations will be installed. The foundations consist of monopiles, which are 65m long, weigh around 800 tons and have a diameter of 8.1m, and transition pieces which weigh 337 tons and measure 25m high.

The 1.2GW project is poised to commissioned in 2020. Siemens Gamesa has been commissioned to supply 174
SWT-7.0-154 turbines which are expected to produce power for more than 1 million homes.
