SGRE 11 MW giant spins in Østerild

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has installed and commissioned its SG 11.0-193 DD wind turbine at a test centre in Østerild, Denmark. The turbine prototype has now produced 11 MW of power.

The offshore wind turbine model features a 193 metre diameter rotor, utilising 94 metre long blades and reaching a tip height of 236.5 metres. SGRE explains that constant digital observations are processed by the control system, which allows the system to deliver up to 11 MW of renewable electricity. The nacelle was produced in Brande, while the 94 metre B94 Integral Blades were produced in Aalborg.

The blades spin six to eight times each minute - and the blade tip speed can be close to 300 kilometres per hour. Each time the blades spin, they cover an area of 29,300 square meters.

The introduction of the turbine model to SGRE's range was announced in November last year. It coincided with the revelation that SGRE had been selected as preferred supplier for the entirety of Vattenfall's Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) wind farm zone. At the time of the announcement, SGRE confirmed that it was to supply the Hollandse Kust Zuid 1&2 and Hollandse Kust Zuid 3 & 4 sites with approximately 140 of its 11 MW Direct Drive offshore wind turbines.

Just last week, SGRE was named as the preferred turbine supplier for two offshore wind power projects in the German North Sea totalling 1,142 GW. A five-year service and maintenance agreement is included in the preferred supplier award. At both the 900 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 and the 242 MW Gode Wind 3 sites, SGRE will deploy its new SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbine model.
