Siemens and Sif ink Maasvlakte marshalling agreement

Sif Group, the manufacturer of foundations for offshore wind turbines, has signed an agreement with Siemens for marshalling activities at its Maasvlakte site in Rotterdam. The new contract will start in 2021 and run until 2023.

In August 2019, the Port of Rotterdam Authority leased an additional 20 ha at Maasvlakte to Sif for marshalling activities. This lot is adjacent to Sif’s existing port site, which the firm uses for the assembly, coating and storage of foundations for offshore wind farms.

Sif’s first client for marshalling activities at Maasvlakte was DEME Offshore. This contract involved the provision of logistics services and facilities for the installation of monopiles at the Borssele 1&2 offshore wind farm. The project will consist of 94 Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SG 8.0-167 DD turbines, with a combined capacity of 752 MW. It is located 23 km off the coast of Zeeland (Westkappele), and is expected to provide power to over 500,000 households once completed. The project should be fully commissioned by the end of the year.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has made a strong commitment to the energy transition. Its ambition is to establish itself as a premier offshore port and a hub for the offshore wind sector.

The Netherlands is currently aiming to source 70% of its electricity from sustainable sources by 2030. That amounts to at least 84 TWh, with more than half of this coming from offshore wind farms. Currently, just over 1 GW of offshore wind power is operational off the coast of Netherlands with over 3 GW in pre-construction or past the construction consent phase. By 2023, the government expects that there will be 4.5 GW of offshore wind power operational, equating to 16% of the country's electricity needs.

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) recently closed the subsidy-free tender for the Hollandse Kust Noord Wind Farm Zone in the North Sea. It received several applications for the 700 MW project site. The RVO will assess these applications and expects to announce the winner of the permit to be announced in the summer. The site is expected to account for approximately 2.5% of the total current electricity consumption in the Netherlands.
