SSE Renewables and Equinor have secured Contracts for Difference (CfD) for three offshore wind farms in the UK government's latest auction. The projects, Doggerbank Creyke Beck A, Doggerbank Creyke Beck B, and Doggerbank Teeside A will have a combined capacity of 3.6 GW and are located more than 130 km off the east coast of the UK in the North Sea.

Creyke Beck A secured a CfD with a strike price of £39.65/MWh whilst Creyke Beck B and Teeside A secured contracts for £41.61/MWh. The projects are expected to produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 4.5 million UK homes. The project partners estimate that the development will trigger a total capital investment of approximately £9 billion between 2020 and 2026.

The partners are planning to reach a final investment decision for the first project in 2020 and first power generation is planned for 2023. Further phases of the Dogger Bank project will be developed thereafter. The joint venture will seek non-recourse project financing to fund the development. The joint venture has selected SSE as the lead operator for the project construction phase and Equinor as the lead operator for operations. Both companies will second personnel into the execution and operations teams.

“The successful bids for the world’s largest offshore wind development represent a game-changer for our offshore wind business and support the development of Equinor as a broad energy company. A full-scale development of Dogger Bank will constitute an industrial wind hub in the heart of the North Sea, playing a major role in the UK’s ambitions for offshore wind and supporting the net zero ambition. Excellent wind speeds, shallow waters and scale make Dogger Bank well positioned to deliver low cost renewable electricity to UK homes and businesses,”
says Eldar Sætre, CEO of Equinor.

SSE also struck success in the CfD auction with its 454 MW
Seagreen Phase 1 project, located around 27 km from the Angus coastline in Scotland. It is expected to power around 560,000 households and is the first phase of SSE's Seagreen development.

Jim Smith, Managing Director of SSE Renewables, said: “I’m very proud SSE Renewables has been awarded contracts to deliver new renewable energy from offshore for the UK. These are by far the largest volume of low carbon contracts awarded in this CfD auction round and the biggest ever secured by SSE Renewables, confirming the company’s position as the leading developer and operator of renewable energy across the UK and Ireland. Working with our project partners as well as the wider supply chain, we will now turn our focus in the months ahead to mobilising Seagreen and Dogger Bank towards financial close and construction.

“Achieved at record low prices with no additional cost to the consumer above forecast wholesale prices, these contract awards demonstrate the value for money that new renewable generation, and these projects in particular, represent to UK energy customers."
