Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has been awarded a contract from the Prysmian Group to supply 150 km of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) submarine cable for the 1.4 GW NeuConnect Interconnector.

Sumitomo Electric has been nominated as subcontractor to supply a section of HVDC Mass Impregnated cable to Prysmian PowerLink, who secured the main contract with NeuConnect for the turn-key design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 725 kilometer submarine interconnector that will directly link the German and UK electricity grids. The submarine cable, which forms part of the offshore cable route between the two countries, will be manufactured at Sumitomo’s Osaka Works in Japan.

This is the Company’s sixth European HVDC power link project after
MON. ITA (Montenegro-Italy), NEMO (UK-Belgium), A-Nord HVDC project (Germany), Kontek (Germany-Denmark) and Greenlink (Ireland-GB).

Yasuyuki Shibata, Managing Executive Officer of Sumitomo Electric, commented: “We are honored to be the supplier for this project, which will form part of critical infrastructures to achieve net-zero emissions. As a leading player in the HVDC power transmission industry, Sumitomo Electric is committed to supporting the creation of a zero-carbon society with its reliable and trouble-free high-voltage cable system technology.”

The 1,400 MW NeuConnect project will be the first to connect German and British energy markets through a 725km long cable route. It aims to support the use and integration of renewable energy generation resources in both Germany and the UK and facilitate that transfer of enough to power for up to 1.5 million homes over the life of the project.

The £2.4bn/€2.8bn project is backed by Meridiam (France), Allianz Capital Partners on behalf of Allianz insurance companies (Germany) and Kansai Electric Power (Japan), NeuConnect is a privately-financed interconnector. The project reached Financial Close with a consortium of more than 20 national and international banks and financial institutions including the UK Infrastructure Bank, European Investment Bank (EIB), and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

The NeuConnect interconnector will see two new converter stations built on the Isle of Grain in Kent, England and the Wilhelmshaven region in Lower Saxonia, northern Germany, connected by land and subsea cables travelling through British, Dutch and German waters. It is slated to be operational by 2028.
