Sweden makes cost reduction plans for offshore wind

The Swedish government have published a proposal, as part of the Energy Agreement, for reducing the grid connection costs for offshore wind.

To date the expense of connecting offshore wind farms in Sweden has been a major hindrance to development and progress has been slow.

The Swedish Transmission System Operator Affärsverket Svenska kraftnät have now been tasked with expanding the transmission network to areas within Sweden's maritime territory. This will reduce the costs of connecting offshore electricity generation facilities to the transmission network and level the playing field between offshore and onshore wind.

The proposal documents are open for public consultation until 3rd May 2021. The change in the Swedish power grid instruction is proposed to enter into force on 1st August 2021.
