The U.S. pushes more R&D

Last month the DoE chose NYSERDA to administer $18.5 million offshore wind research and development (R&D) consortium.

Now, the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) has released information about a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for 'Advanced Wind R&D to Reduce Costs and Environmental Impacts'.

The funding is being done by the Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) with a total of $6 million available. The R&D will be looking at both on-shore and offshore wind in an attempt to find a method of lowering the cost of wind energy, increase the capacity, and to address environmental and human use considerations.

The FOA itself contains three topics that the applicants will consider. The first of which is the advancing of smart curtailment strategies, then after that is the design of new turbine components. Lastly the FOA will focus on the development of and validation of offshore wind monitoring and mitigation technologies.

Each of the topics has up to $2 million available, with possible awards for funds ranging from $500,000-$1,000,000 depending on the amount of applicants awarded. Also, WETO warns that there will be no webinar for this FOA and urges all applicants to "carefully review the complete FOA"
