Merkur Offshore GmbHMerkur Offshore GmbH announced that the wind farm has begun to produce its first power.

The power was generated from the test on the MO40 turbine which supplied power to the minigrid. During the tests power was gradually increased up to 2MW, Merkur state that this was the maximum power that could be achieved at the time with the current wind speeds.

The developers will carry out further power tests over the coming days as the wind speeds allows.

These tests follow the installation of the Haliade 150-6MW wind turbines that have been installed by GeoSea's Seafox 5. The vessel's crane boom was lengthened in preparation for the work and the vessel has been on site since February 2018.

The 396MW Merkur wind farm is located approximately 45km north of Borkum Island in the North Sea and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2019. It is anticipated to generate enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of around 500,000 households annually.
