On 18 August 2020, a preliminary meeting was held to discuss the arrangements for the examination of an application for development consent for the AQUIND Interconnector.

The meeting primarily focussed on the process only, and did not discuss the substance of the proposal, including: questions, discussions and benefits or disadvantages of the proposed link. This will begin the day after the Preliminary Meeting.

The council representatives raised significant concerns about the environmental impacts of the
submarine cable. Richard Turney from Hampshire County Council highlighted issues regarding highways impacts, flooding, drainage and how the development scheme would be managed.

Ian Maguire, Assistant Director Planning and Economic Development in Portsmouth City Council recommended that the examination authority should conduct additional site inspections to consider how works will impact upon traffic and transport and scope for mitigation of that. He also said that the public open spaces are of utmost importance to the residents and impacts on them should be discussed further.

Due to the technical limit of people who can attend the meeting, it was divided into two parts. The meeting will be resumed on 8 September 2020.

The 242 km long
cable between UK and France will cost ~£1.1 Billion.
