Van Oord has partnered with Saare Wind Energy to mutually develop the Saaremaa offshore wind farm, located south-west of the Estonian island Saaremaa in the Baltic Sea. Saare has been developing the project since 2015.

Previously, the Estonian Government had refused to start the construction permit procedure for the wind farm. This was reportedly due to national security concerns over the source of project investment.

The next phase in the development process includes the start of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which will be initiated after a positive decision has been received from the Estonian authorities. Van Oord and Sare “are convinced that the combined knowledge base will facilitate a successful development of the project”, which could act as a “foothold for the development of an international Baltic Grid”.

Covering 154 square kilometres, the Saaremaa offshore wind farm’s prospects have been significantly boosted following this announcement, which carries the support of the Estonian Investment Agency.
