Vattenfall eyes up new Swedish wind farm

Vattenfall is exploring the possibilities of a new offshore wind farm in Sweden named Kattegatt Syd but has some competition.

The Kattegatt Syd project is located approximately 25 km outside Falkenberg. The area is approximately 177 square kilometers and is just north of the 864 MW Stora Middelgrund project which Vattenfall acquired in 2019. The area for the planned park is within the Swedish economic zone and is located outside the Natura 2000 areas Stora Middelgrund and Röde bank and Lilla Middelgrund.

The project is in the very early stages and Vattenfall is currently preparing all the necessary permit applications. Authorities and municipalities are informed about the project and will be consulted when it comes to plans to carry out environmental studies. Vattenfall is also investigating a suitable connection point to the electricity grid and will contact any landowners which may be involved.

The demarcation consultation is planned for winter 2020 and includes authorities and municipalities as well as associations, organizations and the general public.

Proximity to the Stora Middelgrund project is an important factor in the development of the Kattegatt Syd. According to Vattenfall important benefits can be achieved by sharing lessons learned, data and a co-location of operations and maintenance.

Provided that permits are obtained and that investment decisions can be made, the park is expected to be ready by the end of the current decade. Vattenfall estimate that approximately 30-40 locally employed full-time technicians would be needed for the operation of the park.

However, Vattenfall does have some competition; Swedish renewable energy developer OX2 is also investigating the area for its proposed Galatea-Galene offshore wind farm.

The project is expected to generate an annual output of approximately 3800 GWh and initial designs include 15-25 MW turbines. This project is also at a very early stage. OX2 released a consultation document in March 2020, the first step in preparation of a Natura 2000 environmental impact assessment, which it hopes to submit in 2021. OX2 foresees gaining the required permits by 2024, financial close in 2026 and starting offshore construction in 2028 with full commissioning achieved in 2030.
