VDL Network Supplies to support Borssele connection

TenneT has awarded VDL Network Supplies a contract to support the construction of half of the Wintrack masts for a new 380 kV high-voltage connection from Borssele to Rilland. A wintrack mast consists of two pylons, on which the high-voltage lines are suspended.

In April, TenneT expects to award the construction of the masts for the other half of the route. The process has been split into two work areas. The working area west of Willem-Annapolder (from Borssele Station to Willem-Annapolder) and the working area east of it (from Willem-Annapolder to Rilland high-voltage substation). The contractors each carry out half of this work. The order for VDL comprises the production, delivery and installation of 104  masts for the Willem-Annapolder to Rilland route. The first work is expected to start at the end of 2020.

The 380 kV connection will support electricity transmission from Borssele. The current connection is currently bottlenecked. In addition, it will support connections for the planned offshore wind farms off the Borssele coastline (
Borssele 1&2 and Blauwwind. This makes it necessary to increase the transport capacity from the Borssele station to the Dutch high-voltage network. Furthermore, the new high-voltage connection South-West 380 kV West, includes a new 380 kV high-voltage station at Rilland. This forms an important link in a connection with Belgium.

The construction of the 48 km long 380 kV connection between the Borssele and Rilland high-voltage stations will start after the summer of 2020. As part of the project, a total of 42 kilometres, 131 half-timbered masts, will be demolished from the existing high-voltage connection.

The construction of the Rilland high-voltage substation for the 380 kV transport has been completed. This assignment has been carried out by SPIE. The company is also responsible for care of the conductor assembly (hanging the power wires) for the entire connection.
