Vos Prodect to deliver subsea cable protection for Orkney project

Vos Prodect Innovations (VPI) B.V. has announced that, in the second quarter of 2022, the delivery of its Cable Protection Systems (CPS) for a subsea cable project off the islands of Orkney in Scotland.

Vos Prodect will support a cable replacement and protection project contracted by Global Offshore. The work will support the replacement of SSEN's subsea cables which connect the islands of Orkney. The 35-year-old subsea cable, which has fulfilled its operational lifetime, will be replaced to maintain the electricity facility to the mainland of Scotland and its islands.

Vos Prodect stated that its CPS features an interlocking mechanism, resulting in faster assembly without the use of nuts and bolts. The company also outlined that the system provides bend restriction and impact protection.

In total, 2km of the cast iron shells will be installed in the Scottish sea together with cable clamps. Vos Prodect’s cast iron shells are cast from ductile iron half-shells and will serve to protect and stabilise subsea power cables on the seabed.

Last year, Vos Prodect’s Cable Protection System was utilised for an offshore cable replacement between the islands of Skye and Harris in Scotland.
