World's first Reactive Compensation Station stands tall

OrstedThe first ever offshore Reactive Compensation Station (RCS) has just been installed at the 1.2GW Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm.

Anticipated to be the largest wind farm in the world, Hornsea One is located 120km off the Yorkshire coast and, once completed in 2020, will power over one million homes per year.  The project will feature 174 SWT-7.0-154 wind turbines and have the longest HVAC offshore wind farm cable route at 900km.

Due to the cable length a RCS is required to compensate for reactive power losses and so ensure the efficiency of the power transmission. It will be located around half way between the site and the shore and consists of a jacket foundation and a topside which weigh 1500 tonnes and 2500 tonnes respectively. This is comparable to the weight of 40 blue whales or 650 elephants.

The installation of the first ever offshore RCS was completed at around 23:30 on 25th June 2018.
